Lyft Rentals stood out to me in 2021 because it put Lyft in the awkward business of owning and managing cars. I saw a convenient Mission location and thought the service could give riders another reason to open the app. Convenience was visible; the fleet economics weren’t.
Lyft shut down the in-house rental program in 2022. That changed my view of this experiment. A booking interface can scale cheaply. Cleaning, parking, maintaining, and repositioning rental cars cannot. The product was useful, but usefulness alone didn’t make Lyft the right fleet operator.
